How this works
BaZi (八字, literally "eight characters"), also known as the Four Pillars of Destiny, is a Chinese astrological system that encodes your birth year, month, day, and hour as four pairs of Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches — ten cyclical "stem" symbols and twelve "branch" symbols, each tied to one of the five elements (Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water) and a Yin or Yang polarity.
Your Day Master — the Heavenly Stem of your day pillar — is the chart's central reference point, representing your core self. Everything else in the chart is read relative to it: a proper reading first assesses whether the Day Master is "strong" or "weak" (based on seasonal support and the balance of supporting versus draining elements around it), because that single assessment flips which elements are actually favorable for you. This calculator computes that strength assessment directly rather than assuming a fixed rule, and derives your Ten Gods (shi shen) — the relationship each stem has to your Day Master — and your Luck Pillars (da yun), 10-year cycles whose direction depends on your birth year's polarity and your gender.
Accuracy here depends on getting three boundaries exactly right, which is where a lot of free BaZi tools cut corners: the BaZi year turns over at LiChun (Start of Spring, ~February 4th) based on the Sun's actual ecliptic longitude, not January 1st; the month boundaries are also solar-term based, not calendar months; and the day pillar follows the classical Zi-hour rule, where a birth at or after 11pm belongs to the next day's pillar. This calculator computes all three from real solar-longitude astronomy rather than a lookup table.
